Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga Shine in Joker: Folie à Deux – A Spiraling Musical Experience

I have to admit, when I first heard that Joker: Folie a Two would be a musical film, I was intrigued. With Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role as Arthur Fleck and the inclusion of the incredible Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, there was a lot to be excited about. But as much as I wanted to like it, this sequel, while showing some improvements, often falls into the same pitfalls as its predecessor. Let’s see what worked and what didn’t.

The Musical Twist For Lady Gaga

When I found out that Joker: Folie a Two would be a musical film, I was curious to see how Phoenix and Lady Gaga would handle it. Surprisingly, the musical elements added a bit of structure and flavor that the first film didn’t have. Phoenix, along with the other cast members, sings show tunes in the fantasy sequences, giving the film a Pennies From Heaven vibe. And with Lady Gaga’s musical talent, I was expecting fireworks. She definitely brings her own signature style, but I felt her character, Harley Quinn, lacked the depth I saw in her A Star Is Born performance.

The Great First Act

I must say that the film starts off nothing short of sensational. The spoof Warner Bros. Looney Tunes cartoon was a fun and clever way to revisit the previous film. Things really pick up when we are introduced to Arthur’s life in prison. I loved seeing Brendan Gleeson as a prison guard, and Catherine Keener added a solid touch as Arthur’s lawyer. Also, seeing Steve Coogan as a TV interviewer and Zazie Beetz returning, albeit briefly, was a nice throwback to the original film. However, as the story progressed, I couldn’t help but feel like the film was stuck in a repetitive loop.

Lady Gaga in the Joker’s Relationship

As soon as the Joker and Harley meet in music therapy class, you can feel the sparks flying. Their love, though complicated and self-obsessed, adds a fascinating dynamic to the story. Lady Gaga’s portrayal of Harley Quinn brings a layer of sly, manipulative malice that Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur lacks. Still, as much as I enjoyed their chemistry, the film’s claustrophobic setting – Gotham Prison – left me wanting more. For long stretches, the characters are kept apart, and it felt like we missed out on seeing the full potential of their relationship.

The Supporting Cast Shines

I have to give credit to the supporting cast. Brendan Gleeson as a prison guard delivered a rare moment of humor. Catherine Keener’s role as Arthur’s defense attorney, trying to argue for his diminished responsibility, gave the film a much-needed legal drama edge. Harry Loty also did a good job as the district attorney who pushes for Arthur’s execution, though the script doesn’t give him much to work with. Despite these performances, the film never gets going and often feels repetitive.

Overall, Joker: Folie a Do had great moments, especially with its musical numbers and supporting cast, but it never fully came together for me. Joaquin Phoenix’s performance was as powerful as ever, and Lady Gaga added a much-needed spark to the story, but the film’s repetitive nature and claustrophobic setting held it back. I couldn’t help but wonder what might have been if the film had allowed its characters to develop more. Still, if you’re a fan of Phoenix, Gaga, or are simply curious about this unique sequel, it’s worth a watch – but don’t expect it to live up to the hype.
